Innovate Finance Response to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) call for evidence on Issues Relating to Near Field Communication (NFC) Access on iOS
Innovate Finance has submitted its response to the CMA's call for evidence on near field communication (NFC) access on iOS. In the response, we argue that fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory access to smartphone NFC functionality is essential to support competition, innovation and consumer choice in digital payments and wallets. We make the case for free access to Host Card Emulation (HCE) and Secure Element (SE) access or, if priced at all, charges that are strictly on a cost-base only. We also argue for an approach that supports both payments and wider use cases such as digital identity. The response also highlights the importance of aligning the CMA's approach with wider government priorities including Open Banking, account-to-account payments and the UK's digital identity framework.
